About ActionAid

ActionAid is a global federation working for a world free from poverty and injustice. We want to see a just, fair and sustainable world, in which everybody enjoys the right to a life of dignity, and freedom from poverty and oppression. So we work to achieve social justice and gender equality, and to eradicate poverty.

Our strategy is to build international momentum for social, economic and environmental justice, driven by people living in poverty and exclusion.

Pan African University(PAU) 2023-2024 Scholarship Applications: Masters and PhD Scholarships

In practice, this means working closely with people living in poverty and exclusion, civil society organisations, social movements and supporters. Together, we deliver grassroots programmes, provide emergency relief and campaign for things such as women’s economic rights, tax justice and climate justice.

Our work falls into four broad areas: womenpolitics and economicsland and climate, and emergencies. We have a particular focus on women’s rights; it’s a thread that runs through all our work.

ActionAid was founded as a charity in 1972. In the 1990s, we adopted a human rights-based approach to development. In 2003, we established the ActionAid International federation. Our head office is in Johannesburg, South Africa. We also have hubs in Asia, the Americas and Europe.

This is our international website, where we share inspiring stories from around the federation, bold thought-leadership and practical tools that catalyse change. You can visit any of our websites to find out more about the work of ActionAid offices around the world, and how you can get involved. We also have a Global Leadership Team, comprising some staff from ActionAid International, and a number of country directors from around the world. You can learn more about this team here.

We believe in the power in people. If we can support people to know, claim and defend their rights, the world will be a fairer place.

2023 Western Union Foundation Fellowship

Over 70% of the Federation’s total external income is generated by the five countries set out in the following figures. Malawi and Denmark’s income is overwhelmingly from Institutional sources; whereas Greece, Italy and the UK are each a mix of income types that is weighted towards Individual Giving.

Breaking Barriers is a four year, Norad-funded multi country project which seeks to address some of the key barriers that prevent children, especially girls and marginalized children from enjoying their right to free, quality, inclusive public education.  The barriers include discrimination, inadequate financing and the proliferation of private, low-cost schools. The project is being implemented in  Malawi, Mozambique, Nigeria and Tanzania.

The project’s objectives are structured around ActionAid’s 4S framework for education financing, emphasizing the need to ensure that:

  • Governments take actions to increase the size of national budgets by raising fair tax
  • Governments take actions to increase the share of funds allocated to and spent on free, quality, inclusive public education
  • Public education policies, systems and expenditure are sensitive to the rights of girls and marginalised children
  • A strong active movement of community and civil society structures effectively scrutinise education budgets and expenditure and hold governments to account for the provision of free, quality, inclusive public education especially for girls and marginalised children.
